There can also be erosion on the fire side of the metal. Metal fatigue from expanding and contracting as the boiler heats up and cools down over 50 years can take its toll as well.
Like the earlier post about "Grand-dad's hammer" (or axe) parts are replaced as they wear out, but the heart, soul and magic of a steam locomotive will always be there.

are they replacing anything else on Marsh? i read earlier about the new boiler. will Marsh have the same paint job?

I talked to a DRR engine crew on the Ripley back in August last year. They expect it May or June of this year but have no clue what paint or detailing was added or removed.

Well, it is SUPPOSEDLY returning with a tender seat which would be very exciting and from what I have heard, the new timeframe is August 2012 for its return, I may be down at the Resort around that time, so if it's not back yet, hopefully I can get some news on it.
