I was cruising around YouTube the other day and ran across this.

"Disneyland Railroad on Fire. 12-25-09"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9uqPIe3K5Y&list=FLmT0sWkCj3-tkbuslKhQ4_w&index=1&feature=plpp_video

The title appears to be a somewhat alarmist as the crew does not seem to be concerned.

If nothing else it'll keep the weeds from growing in the ballast.

I only wish that they could direct the fire to the left side of the train to get rid of that darn hedge!

Neat video!

My guess--just a little sloppy firing. Probably pooled some fuel oil on the fire pan.

Most likely not, I think the boiler is made to withstand high temperatures, though I think the burning fuel is in the little catch ( I don't know what it's called in oil burners, simliar to ash pans on coal burners). They also usually turn up the fuel valve since it is mainly off in the dioramas to reduce smoke that could trigger the sprinklers inside.

I meant that if say the boiler was meant to operate at 300F, then probably its made to withstand 600 or 700 degrees

Um, no. They do not turn off the fuel valve in the dioramas. That would not only cause steam pressure to go down, more importantly, it would allow cold air to get sucked throught the dampers and then through the boiler tubes. That rush of cold air through a hot boiler can wreak havok on the boiler tubes.

The boiler isn't "made to withstand high temperatures" per se; It's meant to withstand high pressures.

It is usually turned down, but I don't think all the way completely off, as for the boiler I am probably mistaken...
