There have been several nice reproductions of the 3" SF&D patch with the block lettering on an angle. Is there any interest in the larger (nearly 4") patch used in the very earliest days, with the slanted lettering (almost script)? This is the one I mean:

As opposed to this:

Yes, as long as it is a cloth patch and that nasty plastic backing is not attached.

Well, I don't know what the backing would be like (why does that even matter if it's on the back??); I don't even have a vendor at this point. Besides--aren't all patches made of cloth?

Steve,

The 1955 patches, and really all patches prior to 1965, had no iron on back. They were cloth all the way through. If you look at the patch on the hat above, you can tell there is no plastic iron on backing so it creases and folds with the hat. The reproduction one has an iron on backing which is why it looks stiff.

When were the 4" patches phased out and replaced with the 3" version?

True--the newer patches are stiffer. But I'm not sure it's even possible to get patches without that backing.

I'm still trying to determine exactly when the original large patches were phased out.

Regardless, if you can bring this to fruition, I would like one.

I'd be in for at least one.

People that like to sew on their patches (the iron-on glue never seems to stick very well if you're rough on your patch jacket/hat/shirt) sometimes have a problem with poking a sewing needle through the iron-on glue.

That's what sewing machines are for. :P
