 Post subject: Turbo Generators?

While reading Michael Broggie's book and comparing the before and after pictures of the WDWRR engines, one thing that really stood out to me was the lack of turbogenerators on them after the rebuild.

While thinking of how to intelligently word this post I realized that generators would not match the period of the locomotives. So my question is: How is electrical power supplied to the train?

On the DRR locomotives, there is an on board electrical system powered by batteries. The batteries are stored in the "toolboxes" at the rear of the tenders and they are charged by an alternator mounted on one of the passenger coaches' trucks.

on some of the cars you can actully hear the chain that turns the alternator. You can see the battery box in this pic

Actually, Train man, that battery you have circled powers the new low water alarms on the engines. The red tool box next to that black cover contains the battery for the on-board electrical accessories, such as the headlights, cab lights and spiels.

The WDW engines, as I've read on that forum, actually use steam-powered generators hidden on the tenders.

On the CP&LE we stuck the turbogenerators under the fireman's seat.

There are steam driven turbine generators located on the back of each tender that supply the electrical power to the coaches and fill the power needs for the locomotive as well (lighting, low water, etc).

It is all contained in the short box at the back of the tender. Makes a mighty fine step as well to get back on the tender after loading at the stations.

I had the same question train man. I have not noticed any tell tale exhaust steam. Maybe that's part of the Disney Magic? :wink:

At start up there is a lot of vapor exhaust, however once it's warmed up there is little discernable exhaust from the turbine.
