I remember that steam would come out of there both when the trains were in motion and also when stalled or taking on water,so I assumed they were steam powered as well.

The turbogenerators take up a fair amount of space. The compressors are in the cab on the fireman's side on the #3,4 and 5. No room there, plus no tneder on the #3 &#5. To tender mount them on the #1,2 and 4 I would surmise that you would have to lengthen the tenders to accomadate them. It's like Steve said. It's worked for 52 years. If it ain't broke don't fix it. (Now there's a saying to hang on the wall in Anaheim!)

Unless it's cold weather or you see it just starting up in the morning you won't really see much of an exhaust. There is a small pipe point towards the ground on the firemans side of the generator. You really have to get down on the ground and look up to see it, but its there.

Just though I would quote real quick I am very amused that you think the box on # 4 contains batteries, not the case!! the pic that said battery is all that we have, it is the battery for everything like the lights, spiel and etc. How ever though the low water system and governers for the compressor are powered by solar panels!! yes thats right solar panels and the panels are located on top of the cab roof next to the door hatch so you cant see them, by the way thank you DL Roundhouse for not firing me yet for how much info. I give out to ya guys!! LOL

Right. The low water alarm system doesn't need batteries because it's solar powered. At night time, they don't have to worry about low water situations, right?

You might want to tell that to the guy who designed and installed the low water alarms. He's on the this board frequently.
