Hi All

Hello from a newbie. This is my first post but I'm a long time Disney fan with interests in all things mechanical. Railways figure prominently in my list of interests, particularly the Disney inspired ones. I currently model in On30, mainly Colorado inspired prototypes with some ho and oo thrown in for good measure.

I live in the UK and vacation in the US when work and the bank account allow. In fact volcano ash permitting I will be visiting in about two weeks. My wife and I will fly into SF and then from Emeryville on Amtrak to Denver. We travelled from NY to SF by train last year and enjoyed it so much we decided to do the Sierra/Rockies section again.

So now a question, has anyone measured or drawn plans of Walts Barn? I want to model it in 1/48 scale and have started to draw plans based on estimates from photographs on line. I make the ground footprint to be about 40' by 44'. Any info or help with this project would be most appreciated. Please excuse the cross posting as I will also post this on the modelling group.

Patbert

Welcome Patbert, and go ahead and cross-post--some people miss things the first time around.

I don't know the answer to your questions, but some of our members are heavily involved with volunteering at the Barn. If they don't have measurements, I'm sure someone can get them for you.

Welcome aboard, Patbert!

The Carolwood Pacific Historical Society offers blueprints of Walt's Barn. You can contact Sharon or Michael Broggie about these at 805-498-2336.

BTW, the Barn itself is nominally 27' x 29.3'. I say "nominally" because, as you know, it has something of an irregular shape. I think that the original Marceline barn might have been closer to the dimensions you cite.

I hope you have a nice visit to the States!

Are you going to visit the museum in SF while you are in the area?

Thanks for the number I will give it a call. However the dimensions you give sound good, I was basing mine on 12 inch board and batten construction but if the boards are 10 or even 8 inch this would match your figures. Two heads or more are always better than one! Looking forward to our visit, never had a bad time in the US yet. Thanks again for the info and kind words.

Not this time, we fly in on Saturday and out on the train on Sunday. We did visit the streetcar museum in SF last year though. Absolutely fascinating for such a small place and the curator was a really welcoming, knowledgeable chap.

Would this be the Cable Car Museum you're speaking of?

Welcome to the boards Pat. I believe Jazz was referring to the Walt Disney Family museum at the Presido in SF, not the cable car museum. I could have sworn there is an HO scale barn that was modeled after the Marceline barn. Or did Piko never make the model? This board is a very good resouce and we would love to see postings of your RR and any progress you make on your models, tips and tricks are welcome as well. Enojoy your holiday in America.

This museum is on the Embarcadero just across the road from the Ferry Building and is mainly about the trolley car lines in SF. We did visit the Cable Car Museum a few years back though and it is also certainly worth a visit. As far as I remember it is on Mason St at Washington.
