Dave, when you've determined the closest match for each color, could you combine all the information into a color chart for each engine? We could then put it as a "sticky" at the top of the modeling forum so it doesn't get buried.

The intent would be to make this information easily available. Those more technologically savvy than myself can advise the best way.

Boyd red probably refers to Boyd Coddington, who died recently. I wouldn't expect that paint line to be around long. Also, as you know, any "candy" color will depend on the underlying basecoat.

You may have hit on something. I have been painting these on white. I have noticed that where the paint is thicker, it is darker. I will try a red undercoat and that will prabably help to "un-purple" the color.

Hey everyone been away from the board a while and was about to start working on my Disney trains again when I found this awesome topic. Dave great job on matching premixed paints that are already on the market to the Disneyland Railroad Colors.

A little info about Boyd Coddington and his paint line. A few years ago Boyd sold off his wheel designs and paint colors. The paint colors rights are not owned by the Coddington Corporation they are actually owned by the Dupont Corporation.

If you need larger quantities of the Boyd color check out your local automotive paint dealer. The color is a standard color now and is available where ever Dupont automotive paint is sold. My next Hot Rod I plan to build, a 1959 Ford Galaxy station wagon, will be Boyd Red.

Just want to say it one more time. This is a great topic and a awesome resource. :D

I thought you knew that candy colors are translucent, like stained glass. Candy apple red, for instance, is translucent red on metallic silver. For consistencies sake, best stick with normal, opaque colors.

However, one could possibly use candy blue(or green) on grey to simulate Russia Iron.

Therein lies the problem, finding stock colors out of the can to match Disney colors. But I will persevere.

I tried Tamiya's "Clear Blue" and "Translucent Green" over "Gun Metal" but the effect is not subtle at all and hard to control. They go very blue or very green.

Perhaps some Duplicolor automotive shades might work? They come in small touch-up size bottles, and you can get them at Walmart.

My fault- I should have said I was thinking of adding a small amount of candy color to a clear coating. Disneyland probably just uses an opaque blue grey.

This was an excellent suggestion Roy. I have 3 Dupli-Colors from Pep Boys that I think will replace some of my boiler colors. The blue is darker, the red is less purple and the green is richer. I will photograph them in the sun tomorrow.

Here are paint mock-ups of the 5 locos with paint schemes currently considered to be closest. The "Kandy Scarlet" that appeared to be such a close match to the dark red or maroon or burgundy or whatever turned out not to work very well. Ii looked good on a flat chip and on a curved tube, but when sprayed onto an articulated surface, it pulls itself into and away from corners and goes darker in those areas. It also stays soft even when fully dry. The automotive finishes here on the Holliday, Ripley, Gurley and March dry very quickly and are quite hard. Please give feedback as to your opinion of the "perceived" color regardless of how close a chip matches.

I think they all look great! The C.K. Holliday's red cab looks to be on the dark side to me, but you've made the "pilgrimages" and certainly have better and more current info than me.
