Haha, no worries. The pic isn't well known. It's weird they even dubbed the photo and released it.
Steve Degaetano knows alot about it though.

I think it has been mentioned here before, I just kind of forgot about it.

Indeed I do! that's my scan of it.

They actually didn't dub the photo or alter the image--that name plate is really there. They wanted to announce the new engine before it was ready to be seen.

Sorry for not giving you credit Steve....
Weird way to announce it. Was it on both sides, or just that side? I'll have to make a version of that engine.

Well, a little bit of work has been done.

Cowcatcher is done, starting work on the headlamp, fully textured the cab roof and hatch on top. Work is being done on the cab front in a separate file so that I can see what I'm doing without all the clutter.

Well, it's not really weird considering they had to have a photo of the Marsh weeks in advance to get it published in the supplement where it appeared. The real Marsh just wasn't ready to be photographed out on the line, but they still wanted to announce a new engine for the fleet. My educated guess is that there was no Marsh plate on the other side--this was just done for the photo.

OK, that makes sense why they did it now.

Not much has been done, but I just want to tell you that this project is not going to turn into vaporware!
The drive wheels themselves are done! I'll add the rods last. Also the headlamp supports are in.

I think I should explain something.
This may be a computer model, but it is also going into a simulator like I've said before. Because it's going into a simulator, I need to have the poly count at a fairly decent level. The poly count is the count of ALL the faces of each and every shape one creates, and each one face is equal to 2 polys. That is why everything isn't perfectly round, or a little detail might be missing since I'm trying my hardest to have the poly count just below the recommended maximum so that people with a just-okay-ish video card can atleast be able to run the engine.

In the movie industry, you usually do a low-res and a high-res model, depending on what the shot needs and whether or not the extra detail is needed. You don't need a high-res model with lots of geometry way in the background, as that would slow the render time, which adds up if you're doing motion or multiple frames. I've done renders that would take at least 3 minutes to render, with fairly simple geometry (but that was when I was starting out, I've learned to take it easy on the smoothing node, at least in Maya).

For what you're doing, since a computer game has to render "on the fly", the low-res/low-poly model works.

Hi there,

Being a fellow Train Simulator Modeller (I model for Microsoft Train Simulator, rather than Trainz) it is interesting to see some of the Disney locos appearing! I myself was going to have a go at some of the WDW/DL/DLP ones, but couldn't get hold of any plans :(

Are you planning to export to MSTS aswell?

Ben

Hi nvincer,
It is neat to see another computer modeler on here.
You know, I've never thought of exporting it to MSTS, but if I can I think I'll go ahead and do it. I'll have to do some research to see if gmax can export to MSTS.
What program do you use to model trains?
