I've been fantasizing about restyling the Kimball and Gurley into Forneys that resemble the South Park 2-6-6 Mason bogies. If I come up with something I like enough, I may build a model of it. I'd probably paint and letter it for the DLRR, and give it a fictitious name.

These layout sketches(lots of details omitted) are based on scale drawings of the Gurley and Kimball. The major changes are all pretty obvious. I reused the Kimball drivers on the Gurley strictly for drawing convenience.

That would be quite an undertaking I think if they are going to be operating models due to the structural differences between a Forney and a Mason Bogie. Not that it can't be done of course. LGB has been calling their 2025D based locomotives "Forneys" since they were created when in reality they operate like Mason Bogies.

Let me clarify: I'm interested in the look of the bogies, not the pivoting bogie drive. Actually, there were some Forneys which had the look I'm going for, it's just that the South Park bogies are better known.

Here are some different possibilities:

The tiny Kimball boiler looks less cluttered, with the bell on the sand dome.

On the other hand, the Gurley rear looks too thick, with the wood fence.

Thank you, and thanks for the pics of these beautiful models. 8) If you are who I think you are( ,) I just ran across your colored side views of the San Juan and Tenmile yesterday.

While you're here, be sure to check out everyone's great work- especially that of Dave Sheegog and Sam Towler.

As you can see by Fletch's post count, he has spent some time here in the past. His models are beautiful.

Hi chaps,
Sorry if it seems like I only come here once in a while - the truth is I check this forum every day. I'm not as vocal as I used to be, so forgive me, but I've been following the threads on the Gurley build, the Kimball static model last year and the recent Holliday rebuild all in largescale most closely...and find them to be some of the finest modelling on the web, really cool stuff.

I dono what it is, but model building in the largscale forums has dropped off significantly in recent years, to the point where people go wild over a bit of rust added to a Bachmann shay as being a 'build'. This forum is, and has always been extremely refreshing, not only the innovation displayed in the model building, but the uncompromising attitude to getting the models right, and pushing our skills just that bit further to stay in control of that build - good enough isn't close enough, so you keep going till its right. The ebundance of freelancers wont understand that, nor push their skill so far to be uncompromising.

So they're only Disneyland steam locos..are they real? sure they are, having run more miles than any Mason Bogie ever ran, and pulled more passengers than most steam locos in the world. They deserve that respect and that respect extend to models built of them, you guys have it in spades.

Keep the model building up and I'll keep enjoying the forum as I do everyday. There is great action here. Oh and get on that Forney build too, but dont freelance, get a real feel for the design, the designer and the style by researching and building a scale model of a historical piece...push your skills to build it right and not let the model take control of itself to become another freelance shortchange.

Enjoy!
David.

Well now I need a brief education on the difference between a Forney and a Mason Bogie.
