I thought I had uploaded this one. Better photo due to lighting. And I never get that side with the waterfall painting on the headlamp.

My factory-painted Balboa HO #119 from 1969 is also bereft of a boiler band where the taper and wagon top courses join, as well as under the steam dome. No evidence of nails or screws, though.

Same for the PSC HO scale version except for the rivets or screws. I looked at an old pic of the 119 from the 1860s and it had no bands up there. I couldn't tell if it had rivets or screws from that shot however.

I wouldn't worry about it, since you're not modeling the 119. Most 4-4-0s had the boiler bands on either end of the tapered course.

Absolutely. What I'd like to model one day is the General and the Texas. :)

I'm partial to General and Texas because they reside about 2 hours from me. :)

Chaps,
The rolls either side of the boiler bands can go either way, Russia Iron or Brass,
I was sent a photo of a section of the V&T Genoa's original Russia Iron section with the rolled edges, its all Russia Iron and the brass band is perfectly flat and sits inside it, almost like there are two bands - a wider Russia Iron version with the rolled edges and a flat brass band sitting outside of it.

Take a look at photos of Sonoma, Empire, Genoa and even CP Huntington at the CSRM, all these engines have the rolled edges either side of the bands as Russia Iron (painted now!), with just a flat brass band set within.

Vader, the model is looking sensational.

David.

David that's what I have thought for a long time. I knew I had seen that several times. The band must be made in both one and two pieces depending on the manufacturer.
