DisneyTrainFan75, I think your numbers are a bit off. While 55% is not far off, I think it should be 44.6%. I did this quickly but I think I have it right.

I have been meaning to put together the Disney Experience MSS for years (after putting together his excellent Sleeping Beauty Castle Model in HO scale). So I had all the parts on my computer and I am familiar with scaling in Photoshop having done the Castle and the Haunted Dimension's H.M.

Note: I use 1/87th for HO scale (the Schuco's say they are 1/90th, but I think 1/87th is the "official" scale).

I have a blueprint of MSS that says the front door is 7 foot 0 inches or 84 inches. So in HO scale this comes to about 0.9655 inches.

I pulled in the D.E. Part page #10 which has the MSS front door on it and measured it in Photoshop. It came to 1.983 inches.

So the model needs to be scaled to 0.96/1.983 = 44.6% (approximately). I scaled the model to 44.6% and got 0.966 which is very close to the 1/87th of 84 inches.

Hope this helps,
Karl

Thanks a bunch, Karl. Glad I wasn't too far off and at least in the ball park there. I'm also thinking I might tackle the Haunted Mansion as well in HO scale later on down the road.

So, 44.6% it is !!

I will only be using it as a template for cutting wood.

Personally, I like to use the largest possible dimension, when scaling a model. For instance, I'd like to use the overall length of the station, from the end of one platform, to the end of the opposite platform. Assuming you have the actual dimension, and it's accurate, and your model is an accurate scale model, the scale you calculate will be as precise as possible.

Converting model scales is easy, when you think of it this way: first, you multiply by the inverse of the model's current scale (as if to blow it up to full size). Then, divide by (the inverse of) the scale you want.

For example, Karl measured the paper kit door height as 1.983". The actual door height is 84". 84/1.983 is almost exactly 42.36, so the paper kit scale is 1/42.36. You want 1/24. So, you multiply by 42.36 to blow it up to full size, and divide by the inverse of 1/24, which is 24. 42.36/24 is almost exactly 1.765. Or, if you need a percentage, (to enlarge on a Xerox machine, or your printer, for instance), 1/24 is 176.5% of the original 1/42.36 scale.

Thank you Roy. I am better at calculating dosage and drip rates for IV's. Converting scales hurts my head. That is actually the number I was looking for. What is the percentage i need to blow up the actual printed copy at it's current size on a xerox machine. So 176.5% of original. Thank you.

DisneyTrainFan75, The scale of the paper kit is 1/42.36 (see above). To convert to HO, 42.36/87.1≈.4863, or 48.63% of the original paper kit scale.

Big oops. I must have copied down the wrong digit (a 8 instead of a 4) this morning.

The scale factor is 48.6% for HO (and not 44.6%). So now I think all our number agree within rounding error.

Since I reconverted this error to HO, the percentage error was replicated. Thus 1/24th is 176.5% for the D.E. MSS.

I hope nobody has to reprint their model.
