After seeing Fletch's Roger's Double Ender I have thought about turning a porter into DRR's #3 or #5. This post isn't here because I made actually started building it (unfortunetly), but someone at MLS has created a nice forney from the porter. It is very similar to what I want to eventually do with my porter. myLargescale

Chaps, yes Tim used the older Bachmann side tank Porter. These are discontinued, but still a number of them around. They have been replaced by the saddle tank Porter (looks much like the origins of #4). Search the web there have been a number of Forneys built from these Porters, one in particular I can recal was made from the saddle tank Porter into a 0-4-2T in 1:20 scale. I forget the guys name, but a search under MLS 'Model Making' will bring it up. It would have been early last year. It also featured as a finalist in last year's Garden Railways photo comp (GR December 2004 issue).

At 1:20 scale the Bachmann Porters (either one of them) has a wheel size of approx 27" Not far from the 30" of the #3 and #5 loco's your after. If you drop to 1:22.5 that wheel size increases to 30" anyway! At 1:20 the Porter's wheels are good fro Marsh anyway.

Axle setout is 70mm, or 56" at 1:20, or 62" at 1:22.5.

Hope this is useful.

When the Bachmann revised saddle tank Porter first came out, a group of us decided to do a 'challenge' and see what we could all bash them into. Sadly most dropped out! But Chris Walas, Bob Baxter and I all bashed it into something. Mine was the Rogers mentioned above. Maybe a gang of you could do the same making #3, #4 and #5s!

Have fun,
David.

David, that is exactly why I bought the porter, for its close wheel base to #3. I saw an MLS member start a forney with an old side tanker and a Lionel cab, but he never finished.

I remember seeing that model in GR. He had a consist of scratch built GR cars. That was a good looking model.

Maybe I'll try to do the porter challenge. Thanks for the info, David.
