...Looking at all the pictures in Steve's "From Plantation..." the red on the Kimball seams to be bright all around, maybe similar to the Guards Red. In the picture below that I took last summer it appears to be a maroon similar to the Holliday and Marsh. Does anyone know if it was repainted since 2005 or maybe these photos are just deceiving?

Since you can see the lighter red trim and pinstriping, I'll put my money on the main color being maroon or Burgundy. Maybe Steve's book pictures are deceiving.
The pinstriping is almost orange. The Kimball is definitely NOT maroon.

This is what I suspected. The little scrolling pinstriping around the words, "DISNEYLAND RAILROAD" on the tender of the Holliday are orange orange. The background that they are on is an orange red (perfect match to Model Masters "Italian Red") and even the color of the window trims has more orange in it than "Guards Red". They seem to like orangish reds. Steve, do you know if the Kimball's window trims and cab are the same bright red color?

To better refine boiler colors, I have painted them on curved surfaces (2" PVC pipe) and added a bit of smoke box color. The lighter blue would be the Holloday and the Gurley. The dark blue (almost black) is the Kimball. These are OK but even though some photos and Sam's personal guarantee that the color of the Holliday and Gurley boilers is the same, I really remember the Gurley as darker blue.

When I was in the Park and placed my Honduras Maroon sample against the Holliday cab and Marsh cab and boiler, it was clear that their color has more blue, pushing toward a burgundy rather than maroon. The top row sample below shows a new red called "Boyd Red" by Boyd, a division of Testors. I think that this is closer. I guess that means another trip to D-land! The lighter red to the left of it is Tamiya "Bright Red". This is more orange and lighter than "Guards Red." I think that it will work for the Holliday tender graphic background. Guards Red is in the lower right corner.

I like your boiler colors, especially the two blues. The red looks a little too metallic for me. And the green doesn't seem quite right to my old eyes either.

I believe Sam is correct that the Gurley and the Holliday use the same boiler color.

As long as you're nailing down the colors of the engines, maybe we should also try to lock in the passenger cars? I have a color chip from the Holiday Red cars that I can break out and try to match.

Nothing is settled yet. Your idea to select the car colors is a good one. I used the Ace Red Primer for my freight cars (Holiday Red) and Honduras Maroon for the Holiday Green cars. I know that the "maroon" is really more burgundy. Model Master makes a "Burgundy Metallic" but it is not made in a non-metallic. The quest goes on. I'll look forward to your chip.

Color reconnaissance trip #2 has been accomplished with unexpected results. I purchased the Model Masters "Burgundy Metallic, but it is much too dark. While I was there, I saw Boyd "Kandy Scarlet". This seamed like a reach, but I bought it anyway. I made a chip and it looked too Magenta-like. I almost didn't bring it (I have 12 different reds), but at the last minute included it. It is a dead ringer for the Marsh cab and boiler and all the other dark, maroonish reds on Holliday and Ripley. The color that I thought would be the Marsh red, "Boyd Red" is actually very close to the Kimball cab. Here we go...

Here are 3 of my "dark" chips, Honduras Maroon, Boyd Red and Kandy Scarlet" next to the Marsh cab.

Here we are next to the Marsh boiler.

Here are 3 "light" reds at the March cab. I think the winner for the Marsh trim is the one on the right, "Guards Red"

Here are greens next to the Ripley cab. Krylon, Dark Hunter Green" (bottom) wins.

Here are the same greens next to the boiler. I think that Fathom Green with clear pearl overspray (second from the left) will take this one. The next picture, which was taken from the "sun" side, shows that there is a little difference in the color of the cab and the boiler.

Last comes the Kimball. This was hard because I could see that the boiler was dark, but the reflections from the angle I was shooting from make these very deceiving. In this photo, it looks as though the boiler matches the color chosen for the Holliday, Tamiya for Aircraft "Navy Blue". The chip on the far right is Dark Mica Blue which is almost black. It looks much lighter here. It was the closest match.

Here are my "light" reds next to the Kimball cab. Not even close.

Here are the "dark" reds next to the Kimball cab. The winner is "Boyd Red" (center chip) with the pin striping winner "Guards Red"

You've got some dead-on matches there! The crew seems to be enjoying this!

It is kind of fun in a warped obsessive sort of way. Never mind that I am supposed to be getting some work done. As they say, "...a dog in the hunt don't know he's got fleas..." I put some of the "Kandy Scarlet" on a PVC tube and it looks real purple. It is hard to imagine that it looks so close to something that we have all called red for so long. Maybe I just need to get it away from the other reds. I'll post something on it tomorrow.
I almost forgot. Just for Steve I did carry a chip of Ace Primer Red. It is very close to the freight cars, Holiday Red.

I don't know where our nearest Ace is out here (Lowes and Home Depot seem to dominate). That color does look good though!

Dave, when you've determined the closest match for each color, could you combine all the information into a color chart for each engine? We could then put it as a "sticky" at the top of the modeling forum so it doesn't get buried.
