Yes, BL does try to hold a higher standard, and for the most part, it does. It's a shame this person doesn't feel like posting any more (and Dog with him), and as I said, perhaps things could have been handled differently on both sides.

I've seen similar things happen on other message boards and newsgroup that I participate in that are centered around a diverse range of subjects. In just about every single case, a simple "I'm sorry" would have gone a long way to smooth things over. Due to the anonymous nature of the internet, such apologies are rare based on my experience. That seemed to be the case with that situation here as well.

When a simple apology isn't given though, maybe that truly reflects the person's real intent. Only the original poster knows that however.

It's unfortunate, and perhaps he would have been a great contributor, but perceptions do matter, and so do first impressions. If your first post to a site is to draw attention to an auction of yours in a way that suggests it isn't your auction--and people catch onto this and respond--that's just the nature of the Internet.

Michael, you say there was nothing "sneaky" about "it" (the nature of the post) but that's certainly not how it was perceived.

I'm not sure I buy that someone didn't feel comfortable just coming out and saying, "Im auctioning this," but had no problem saying (and basically lying), "Hey, look what I found on Ebay." If that wasn't meant to be sneaky, it sure came off that way.

Perhaps a lesson for all involved.

That would be a nice thing to mention on the Sign-up Page. Perhaps "Our Fearless Leader" (the other Steve) can put up a notice in red to get their attention...

NOTICE: If you are signing up to Burnsland primarily to promote an item you have for sale, Please DO NOT try any variations on the old "Look what I found on eBay!" dodge thinking "It's funny" - We see it a lot, know how to check, and you will be summarily busted in about 15 seconds. The mention of the auction is fine, however the blatant deception of "Not my auction!" is not acceptable behavior and makes a horrible first impression. Just say "I'm selling this:" and be honest. We hope you like what you read here, return often, and add the wisdom of your life experiences to the open and honest discussions.

Feel free to edit.

Well, we've all been over this ground already, so let's try to get the thread back on track.

Now...what were we talking about? Oh yeah: Pop needs to sell his General so he can drum up the dough to get a FWRR engine. Any takers?

wow, that train is in bad shape. the signature looks terrible. Mine is crystal clear still. The seller does not have the carolwood certificate. I wonder if they have the case and the other items that came with it or if it is just the engine. You would think he would have researched it a little better before putting it up for acution. /sigh

I am order #31 for the Kalamazoo Handcar. I can see the differences in the electric FWRR vs the steam now. Some of the cosmetic changes would not work so well with the real hot backhead nor the real piston housing, I am still happy with my steamer as is. Nothing beats the smell and sound of a real steam loco!

That poor HLW 4-4-0. :(

One thing that is kind of annoying is when people photograph model trains and the wheels are off the track! I've even seen catalog and ads for trains where they're derailed, like the picture in that eBay auction.

Major point of agreement! I even have a cheapie set, where the pictures on the set box show the wheels off the track.

Another peeve is showing the tender backwards.

That guy didn't even make an attempt at getting the wheels on the track!
