You're speaking of injection-molded plastic kits. There are other kinds of kits. For instance, Disney could offer a wood kit of the Main St. horsecar.
Now you're talking about a craftsman kit. There's even less of a market for those than for plastic models.

A plastic kit could still be viable. Most folks don't want to spend the time and money it takes. I am working with a group that is cutting brand new plastic model kits. It is all done in China, molded there and shipped here. The cost difference right now is HUGE....we could not do it state side...we tried. But it takes 9 to 12 months commitment of time producing drawings and approving each step. And there are thing like Chinese new year where the whole country shuts down for 2 weeks!
What would be good is if the Tomy molds are still around and lease or buy the molds and the Disney folks produce a run and sell them at all parks. I KNOW they could sell 5000, about the minimum run in China, across all the parks and online easy! But even a rerun takes someone willing to manage the project.....and I am sure 99.9% of the merchandising project Disney does are easier!

A wood kit can be about the same level of difficulty as a plastic kit, or even easier. Of course, I was thinking of a fairly simple kit.

I've been pretty excited about Moebius Models, who make original "Lost in Space" and "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" kits. I think they use one of those Chinese businesses which provide comprehensive concept-to-shipping container services.

I would imagine Disney could sell even more of the HOn30(N gauge) TDL train sets than the 1:45 static kits. I know they're in big demand, too.

How did their die-cast Jupiter 2 work out? I remember being concerned, as reports were coming in at the time about some Chinese castings suffering zinc pest.

I recently picked up the 1983 Wester River Railroad model kit on ePay. I debated whether or not I should assemble it: the box was trashed, but the kit itself is in pristine condition.

I decided to go ahead and build the thing; it's consistent with my philosophy of "burn the fancy candles, use the guest towels and drink the good wine". That is, I don't believe in turning functional items into art, or saving things for a "special day". If something was meant to be used, it should be used unless there's some overriding reason, such as it being a historic artifact.

While rare, I don't think this model elevates to quite the level of "arc of the covenant", so I'm going to construct it. I'll post photos of the construction here as the project progresses.

First up: I needed to decide if I am going to build it as originally intended or "plus it" a bit. The main components are molded in color and it is billed as "ready to assemble", so (in theory) one could just start cutting and gluing. But the colors aren't quite right and some pieces are just plain wrong. For example, the boiler and smokebox/smokestack are all one piece, molded in red. That would look terrible if assembled as is, so I have to paint at least that section. So, if I'm painting some of it, I might as well paint all of it and try to make it as accurate as possible... or at least as accurate as my humble modeling skills allow.

I also considered making it an Ernest S. Marsh rather than a Rio Grande. However, even though both engines are based on the D&RG Montezuma, there are some very significant differences between the Marsh and the Rio Grande. For example, all of the Tokyo locomotives have forward steam domes. I didn't want to have to take the scalpel to too much of the model, so the Rio Grande it will be.

I'll post photos of the kit as it came out-of-the-box later today.

where did you get this? Did you build it yet?

If you read Michael's post, quoted by you in its entirety above, you'd see that he has not built it yet, and that as he does build it, he'll post progress photos.
