A quick update. So much mission creep! I didn't figure on messing with the frame so much, beyond the motor tower rebuild and cutting off the part behind the drivers. I recently shortened the front frame 2 scale ft., then re-lengthened it by 1' and lowered it by some arbitrary amount. (It was supposed to be 4", but was more.) It turned out very well, as the frame is just slightly above the driver axle centers. :)

I also wasn't planning on doing much to the plastic frontispiece beyond chopping off the doghouses atop the valve chests. Suffice to say there are a few more changes, which you'll see in upcoming photos.

As for a paint scheme, one idea is to paint it to go with my B&O General set cars. It would be a light blue and black, with white lettering. Similarly, I could do my version of the Lionelville Circus Special, for which I have all the extra cars. Another idea is to do a Coca Cola engine like the On30 model. Except, I'd do the boiler in glossy candy red over metallic aluminum. I'm still soliciting your ideas, here!

Cool, can't wait to see. I will keep my eye out for a general tender, my local hobby store sometimes has them in junk boxes. :)

Thanks, but it will be easier for me to just scratchbuild a tender. How come the Lionel tenders don't squeak, when you press the woodpile?

All my other rubber toys squeaked when you squeezed them.

Hey, it's one way to put a whistle in the tender...

Yeah, it was supposed to be a woodpile. It looks more like a barfpad.

OK, now that the chassis and superstructure are almost done, it's time to work on the pilot truck. I'm amazed by all the different linkages and such that toy and model locomotive makers have used to allow lateral movement of their engine's pilot trucks. I'm going to try the method used on the Mantua/Tyco ten wheeler, which is the same as that used on the Marx Wm. Crooks. I bet many of you know which one that is.

Boiler's done. Just got the bugs worked out of the pilot truck this morning. Project completion is in sight. I'll post photos before painting.

I'm kinda leaning towards a B&O paint scheme to match my 1983 set, but I'm still open to suggestions. One thing Lionel has done right with the General is come up with nice paint schemes. But I look at my Marx Wm. Crooks, which is unpainted black plastic with a few gold details, and I admire the simplicity.

How about doing the Wanderer from The Wild, Wild West? Or an orange and black Halloween locomotive? I also like the idea of a Disney engine with characters as crew. I could even have Mickey shovel coal, like the 1930s Lionel lithographed Mickey Mouse circus train.
