From the samples shown on Steve's website above, I'd say the best modern match is common galvanized(zinc plated) sheet.

Man, I'd say that galvanized sheet isn't even close!

Galvanized sheet tends to have crystalline-like patterns. I was not referring to those, but to the color and bright sheen.

I've seen plenty of Galvanized sheet. My statement stands. The "color and bright sheen" aren't even close.

Before paint, there are other changes I would make. I'd like to see longer cowcatchers on all the WDW engines. I'd also move the whistles to atop the steam domes. I like Radley-Hunter smokestacks, but the one on the Roy is badly proportioned for the engine. At the least, the base pipe should be a little smaller in diameter. In addition, the rest of the stack(the diamond portion) should be enlarged a bit.

I'm not a big fan of Hunter & Radley stacks, but that's just me.

I always thought it was strange that there are no capstacks on any of the locomotives at Disneyworld. It is the only Disney Railroad without a cap stack in the line up.

Yes, and also kind of ironic too because cap stacks were common on coal burning engines of east coast U.S. and that's where WDW is located...

I like cap stacks on traction engines and steamboats. They even look good on locomotives, at least those that don't have extended smokeboxes(yuck!) It's just that I like other stacks better on locomotives.
