I went to the Long Island Railroad museum located in Riverhead NY to see progress of restoration of LIRR G-5 4-6-0 #39. The boiler is currently at Strasburg PA getting ultrasonic testing and rebuilding. take a look at the video and tell me what do you think.

Did you take that video during an earthquake?

no, i was in a car and it was raining cats a dogs, you can't see the rain. i was originally going to walk around and explain everything but my camera battery was almost dead and their was a severe thunderstorm advisory (very strong winds and rain) so if i walked around all you would have heard was the muffling of the wind.

I think there's a setting on your camera that would dampen all the intense vibration Sam's referring to.

Ok, gotcha. Still, some slower and more stable panning, even from one spot, would have been nice.

Or practice and get a rock-steady hand. :D I can take clear photos at night with a shutter slower than 1/20 just handheld.

I find that with me, it depends a lot on the weight of the camera and lenses. I've borrowed some lightweight digital SLRs and point and shoots and I just could not get anything clear unless I used a tripod. When I use a heavy film SLR like mine (Nikon F100,) then I have no problem with getting clear pictures without a tripod even when using long exposure times.

There has always been a movement in the camera industry to make everything as light as possible. For me that's definitely not a selling point.

I vary on what shutter speed I can keep a steady hand with. It probably relates to how much caffeine I have had in the previous hour or two. So I'm really loving my new travel tripod - small, lightweight, but there when I need it.

Give this tool a try. Youtube can stabilize the video itself.
