Here are some pics of my Central Pacific Jupiter and Union Pacific 119 G scale models. I wish I could take credit for their beauty, but I purchased them in this state. :)

Wow, those are gorgeous! Are they static models or do they operate? Also, who made them?

Aren't they from Precision Scale Co.?

Agree, they are museum-quality models. Just gorgeous. I sure wish they'd make a set like that in O gauge.

Thanks. yes PSC 1:24 scale. Yes they do run. They talked about making them in O but still haven't. I wish they'd made Texas and General in G scale. I'd have taken the plunge. :) You can still get the G set, but it's gone up 4K since I got it. These things truly hold their value. Of course all that shiny brass is gold plated for protection from tarnishing. They really go the distance on their models.

Are these models finished according to Ward Kimball's paint scheme?

No, they're not. However, the model of 119 features copies of the oil paintigs Ward did for the sand dome and tender.

The blue you see on Jupiter was originally bright red. The scheme was changed when a small period newspaper clipping was discovered that stated that the Jupiter was resplendent in blue (however, this could have been referring to the boiler jacket). There is historical evidence that blue was not uncommon on engines of the period, though...

Ward was allegedly against changing the paint scheme he had devised.

Right. The gold leaf designs are all Ward's design still. Both locomotive designs for both Jupiter and 119, Ward's original and the newer variations of both are quite stunning. I kind of like the newer ones as they are more complex and richer to the eye rather than having just monotone Reds with gold. They did change the 119 as well to more of a wine and red scheme which adds much to the look as well. That's just one man's opinion. The main reason I like the newer styles is because as originally painted by Ward, it was almost like they were painted in the same shop...............but the new scheme shows two entirely different color selections which makes a bit of sense since each originated from opposite ends of the country.

Did the locomotives have 'factory paint' or did the railroads have their own paint shops? Both of them were built in the eastern US.

True--I believe Jupiter is a Schenectady product.

Both would have been painted at their respective factories. I've never heard of a locomotive being delivered unpainted.

While the blue has grown on me over the years, I still prefer the red--it just seems more "railroady" to me.

The fact still remains that these models are absolute works of art, no matter what color! (Yes, that's me being green with envy)

Exactly, Jupiter was Schenectady Loco, #119 was a Rogers Loco. The use of blue is pretty unusual......though the B&O used it some. I agree, Red screams Old Steam. It took me a long while to accept the blue rendition. The shocking bits of red mixed in the scheme eventually turned me on to it after a while. I do still love the original scheme as well. In fact I painted a huge portrait of Jupiter in her red scheme. It's not very good. It was my first attempt at painting a portrait.
